Husband sure liked it. August 25, 2010 Dagny Taggart (Colorado) Bought this for my husband who grew up with Transformers and we have HAD to see the movies. He never wanted any previous Transformer games, but the graphics and gameplay seemed to have improved. He finished the game in no time at all, and didn't play any other games after he got this one. The game appeared to be a bit frustrating during boss fights, because I could hear a few curse words coming from the upstairs bonus room. I think if you dig the Transformers and like shooter games w/decent graphics, this would be a good game, even if you are 30-something.
A yawner... bought because of all hype, but was disappointed August 22, 2010 Saurin Shah (San Francisco, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this because of the stellar reviews here, but when I got the game - I was bored after the first two levels. I have not tried multiplayer as I am only play single player campaigns. I found this game quite boring, the shooting and everything was *okay*. I did like the sound effects and transformations, that was fun - but not enough to keep my interest. On the other hand, I loved Batman: Arkham Asylum and think that Alan Wake is fantastic. Transformers is a middle-of-the-road game good for a weekend rental.
More than meets the eye August 21, 2010 MaRcusDeriLiuS I'm a big fan of the original Transformers, and this game comes closer to the original. The game play is cool cause it gives you options to be a Decepticon or an Autobot , team leader or soldier it's an awesome game.
This game is more than meets the eye!!! August 19, 2010 PresidentEden Transformers: War for Cybertron is not like other Transformer games, its really good. As a Transformer fan I was burned by the bad games of the past but this game is great. The game play is a little like Gears of War and that's not a bad thing. If you are a Transformer fan of just a fan of a great game you should pick up War for Cybertron.
Even non-fans will enjoy August 8, 2010 William B. Partridge (Alexandria, VA) After a long string of terrible to average games it's very nice to see one done so well and without any glaring faults (as opposed to the recent movie game where you had to hold a trigger down to stay transformed). While I am a Transformers fan and it most likely makes the game better for me, I truly believe the game would be enjoyable by even non fans.
First off, it's not perfect. The game is a bit short and yet the missions still seem to drag on a bit with repetitive gameplay. Luckily, by the time the gameplay does start to wear down you're into the Autobot campaign (you play the Decepticons story first, then Autobots) which seems to have a more unique story line, more inventive scenarios (like the road that transforms ahead of you as you drive and the prison level), and much better voice acting.
What really elevates this game though, and what I think will help most of all with non fans, is the multiplayer aspects. First off you have campaign co-op that allows up to 3 people to play through the campaign; best of all it's free to drop-in/out of the game without affecting the host's progress. Added to that you get standard online multiplayer matches, e.g. deathmatch, although with different names. And the final piece is a mode called Escalation - where you get to pick to play as characters from the game and fight wave after wave of enemies while using points to buy ammo/health/upgrades for you OR your teamates or to unlock more of the city you're in to get better upgrades. It's fantastic. While all the various multiplayer modes are online only and thus no offline co-op, it's not really something you'll miss too much and seems to be about the norm for most games now. The only real shortcoming with the multiplayer matches is that you're a bit limited in the customization of your character's looks, although this is helped with the DLC giving you more character models to choose from.
Pros:
++ Transformers
++ Multiplayer modes (Multiplayer/Escalation/Co-op Campaign)
+ Variation and balance between characters (campaign, escalation) and classes (multiplayer)
+ Customization of classes in multiplayer (model, color, weapons, abilities)
+ Voice acting (Autobots)
+ Good story
Neutral
= Voice acting (Decepticons)
Cons:
- Somewhat repetitive gameplay
- Some aspects of multiplayer are limited (e.g. model, color choices) especially without the DLC pack (adds more models and maps)
